Katpone - 15 Pounds of Pure Street Cred

At Furkids, we meet countless animals with unique stories, but every so often, one truly unforgettable character walks through our doors. On Christmas Day, that character was Katpone. This 15-pound, FIV+ tabby with the most impressive jowls we’ve ever seen quickly captured hearts far beyond our shelter, charming people across the country in a social media post that garnered thousands of reactions. There was so much chatter about this guy, it even grabbed the attention of The Dodo, an animal-centered social media account with over 60 million followers.

Many had never seen a cat with cheeks quite like Katpone’s, sparking plenty of curiosity and speculation about possible health concerns. In reality, his signature look is a classic trait of unneutered male cats. Elevated testosterone causes the skin and muscles around the cheeks to thicken, creating what are often called “tomcat jowls.” These jowls help establish dominance among other cats and even provide extra protection during fights. Now that Katpone has been neutered, his hormones will begin to regulate, and we expect those famous cheeks to gradually shrink.

Katpone is also FIV+, or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus positive. FIV is most commonly spread through deep bite wounds, which is why many FIV+ cats have histories of living outdoors, competing for territory or mates. While the diagnosis can sound intimidating, the reality is reassuring: with proper care, FIV+ cats can live long, healthy, and happy lives. They can also safely coexist with non-FIV cats. Furkids is proud to be one of the few rescue organizations in the state that intentionally rescues FIV+ cats and places them into loving homes. And yes - we saw all the comments wondering just how many kittens
this former neighborhood boss may have fathered during his time on
the streets. Those days are officially behind him. Katpone’s bachelor era
has come to an end, and he’ll spend the rest of his life enjoying the
comforts of a warm home, a full belly, and zero responsibility for fatherhood. Most importantly, he’s now safe, loved, and no longer contributing tothe overpopulation of stray cats, and that’s a happy ending we can all celebrate!

Katpone has received dozens of adoption inquiries, and our team is in the process of finding him his purrfect match. In the meantime, we encourage all of Katpone’s fans to consider checking out all of our other big, handsome, FIV+ cats! Visit furkids.org/cat-adoptions and find your very own Katpone!
