Celebrating FeLV+ Adoptions in 2026!
At Furkids Animal Rescue & Shelters, we truly believe that every animal deserves a chance at a safe, loving home - including those who are often overlooked. That’s why we’re proud to be one of the only rescue organizations in the Southeast that intentionally rescues, cares for, and finds homes for cats living with feline leukemia virus (FeLV). And already in 2026, we’ve seen something beautiful: several of our FeLV+ cats have found their forever families. Each adoption is a reminder that when compassion meets education, lives are changed.
Feline Leukemia Virus is a virus that affects a cat’s immune system and can make them more vulnerable to certain illnesses over time. FeLV is most commonly spread through prolonged, close contact between cats, such as grooming or sharing bowls. Because of this, FeLV+ cats are typically best suited as the only cat in the home, with other FeLV+ cats, or cats with an FeLV vaccine. FeLV is only transmitted between cats - not humans, dogs, or other animals.
While a diagnosis of FeLV can sound intimidating, many FeLV+ cats live happy, comfortable lives for years. With proper care, routine veterinary checkups, and a loving indoor home, these cats can thrive.
Cats diagnosed with FeLV are among the most at-risk in shelters. Due to misconceptions about the virus and the specialized housing and care they require, many shelters do not have the resources to support them. Sadly, this often leaves FeLV+ cats with few options. Furkids is committed to changing that. We intentionally rescue FeLV+ cats, provide them with dedicated housing and enrichment, provide the highest quality vet care, and work tirelessly to find adopters who will open their hearts and homes. Our team and volunteers know that these cats are just as loving, playful, and deserving as any other, and they prove it every single day.
Since the beginning of this year, eight of our FeLV+ residents have already found their forever homes, and each adoption has filled our hearts with gratitude. Choosing to adopt a cat with FeLV is an act of compassion that truly saves a life - giving hope to an animal who might otherwise be overlooked.
If you’ve ever considered adopting, we encourage you to learn more about FeLV+ cats. They may require a little extra understanding, but what they give in return is immeasurable: unconditional love, resilience, and the quiet magic of a second chance. When you adopt an FeLV+ cat, you’re not just saving one life, you’re making a statement that every life is worth saving.
