Healed Inside and Out: Furkids’ Commitment to the Dogs Who Need Us Most

At Furkids, our mission has always been simple to say and hard to do: heal the animal inside and out, and find them a forever home. The "inside and out" part matters just as much as the outside. A dog's body can heal with good food, a warm bed, and veterinary care. But some wounds live deeper - in the way a dog flinches at a raised hand, or freezes around children, or can't settle down long enough to feel safe. Those wounds need a different kind of care.

That's why Furkids invests as much in behavioral training as we do in medicine. You can't responsibly match a dog with a family until you actually understand who that dog is - what scares them, what soothes them, what they need to feel confident in the world.

Right now, three of our dogs are living and training at Be Still Dog Training in Dallas, GA, a facility that specializes in exactly this kind of work. Their trainer, Frank, doesn't just teach commands. He gets to know each dog's history, triggers, and personality well enough to tell us (and eventually, an adopter) exactly what kind of home will let that dog thrive.

Muffin came to Furkids in November 2025. We didn't know his history, but we quickly learned some of his triggers: he wasn't fond of kids, and he was wary of men. Without knowing his past, we couldn't know why - we could only listen to what he was telling us.

Under the structure and consistency of an experienced handler, Muffin has blossomed. He gets along beautifully with other dogs, and even cats. Training didn't erase who he is, though - Muffin still isn't a fan of kids, and that's okay. That's not a failure, that's clarity. Muffin's story proves something we believe deeply at Furkids: understanding a dog's triggers, rather than trying to train them away entirely, is what leads to a successful placement.

Vin Diesel is a puppy trapped in an adult dog's body. When he was introduced to Furkids in August 2025, he came to us high-energy, chaotic, and difficult to handle. Life in a shelter gave him nowhere to put all that energy, and without physical and mental stimulation, he wasn't able to show potential adopters who he really was.

Training has changed everything. Vin now has the tools to help him be a balanced, happy dog. What he needs now is a family who wants an adventure buddy: someone active, ready for hikes, runs, and play that tires out both body and mind. Vin's transformation is proof that underneath the chaos, there's often just a good dog who needed someone willing to meet him halfway.

Rescued in October 2024 from an overcrowded animal control facility, Tucker has likely never known stability. Without consistency to anchor him, he began to decline in the shelter environment, so we sent him to Frank to work on the one thing he needed most: confidence.

Tucker has made real progress. But we've also learned something important - he will probably always be a dog who doubts himself. That's not something training erases, and it doesn't need to. Tucker will thrive with a confident owner who can offer him firm boundaries, a steady routine, and a quiet, predictable life. A submissive dog already in the home would help him too, giving him a model to follow. Once Tucker bonds with his person, he's completely devoted. He just needs someone who will show up the same way, every single day.

Why We Do This

This kind of work: the boarding, the one-on-one training, the deep behavioral understanding, is a real investment. But Furkids believes that every animal deserves a home that fits them, not just any home that will take them. A rushed placement that fails doesn't just hurt the adopter. It hurts the dog, who has already been failed once by the people who were supposed to care for them.

Frank doesn't just train dogs and hand them back. He keeps them at his facility until the right adopter is found, so they don't regress waiting. He works hands-on with new families to transition dogs into their homes. And he stays in their lives for good - offering refresher courses, boarding, and support for as long as the dog needs it. We’ve seen him work his magic already with two Furkids dogs.

Marlin came to us abused, scared, and reactive, declining in our care until Frank stepped in. Today, Marlin isn't just healed, he's thriving as a permanent member of Frank's own family, and he's become the model dog who teaches other dogs in training how to feel confident and play well with others. Odie spent a long time waiting for his person, carrying reactivity and triggers that no one could quite figure out. Frank worked with him patiently, then worked just as hard with his eventual adopters to help Odie settle into his new life. Today, Odie's family can't imagine life without him.

Every Dog Deserves the Chance

Muffin, Vin Diesel, and Tucker aren't broken. They're dogs who've been let down by people, and who are now doing the hard work of learning to trust again. Our job is to meet that effort with our own: to invest the time, the training, and the patience it takes to understand them, so we can find them a home that will last a lifetime. We believe there's a home out there for every animal. Sometimes it just takes a little longer to find it - and we think these three are worth the wait.
