The Aftermath of Hurricane Irma

Posted by Furkids Admin | Wednesday, September 13th

As we look into the sweet, sometimes-bedraggled faces of 120 rescued cats and dogs from coastal Georgia, we can't stop crying tears of gratitude and saying thank you to our Irma heroes! What amazing acts of kindness and determination you showed.

The miracles happened by the truckload and planeload, here in Atlanta. Today, we have 120 animal souls saved from almost certain death. On the coast, their caregivers loved them enough to get them to rescue - even setting aside their own evacuation plans to help. In the air and on the ground, our volunteers and staff kept the evacuations coming.  In Atlanta, our heroic staff and volunteers worked to exhaustion to take in and care for helpless animals. You are all heroes!

THE NUMBERS TELL THE STORY:

Two volunteer drivers in a rented van and three volunteer pilots in their own planes transported 120 dogs and cats to Furkids Animal Rescue and Shelters from animal control shelters in six Irma danger zones in Georgia. Animals who had no...

It’s Now or Never for Hurricane Irma Animals

Posted by Furkids Admin | Thursday, September 7th

Friends, we need your help! Animal control operations in the danger zone have been flooded with cats and dogs whose owners had to escape ahead of Hurricane Irma. Furkids already has taken in more than 20 dogs abandoned in south Georgia. Tomorrow, we open our doors to about 50 cats and dogs from shelters in Effingham and Long Counties. People can run, but there's little chance for helpless animals to escape. They're terrified and in terrible danger!  Last Fall, Furkids rescued 100+ animals from Hurricane Matthew, and we want to help again.

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO RIGHT NOW

Adopt a Furkid this weekend, September 9 and 10, during PetCo's National Adoption Weekend. When you adopt, you make room for Irma's furry refugees and Furkids gets credit from PETCO to help more animals. Find us this weekend at PETCO locations in Alpharetta, Crabapple, Holcomb Bridge Road, Sandy Springs, Smyrna. We've dropped our adoption fees for this weekend as an incentive. Our shelters are also open for...

“Wrong Place, Wrong Time” Almost Cost 61 Lives

Posted by Furkids Admin | Friday, July 28th

Yes, you read that right: sixty-one, including Cosette. This is a story about chance, empathy, compassion, survival, and ultimately, this is a story about you.

Summer is always a busy time at Furkids, as the shelter population swells with spring and summer litters and are compounded by owner surrenders during vacation travel season, but this summer made headlines.

In June, the entire feline population at Bartow County Animal Control was accidentally exposed to feline distemper. Potentially deadly and incredibly virulent, this diagnosis meant that every cat in the facility would require weeks of careful quarantine and medical care that was beyond the county facility’s budget. Sixty-five cats were scheduled for euthanasia.

When Bartow County officials contacted Furkids for help, a rescue operation was launched and the cats were transferred and safely quarantined at Furkids’ cat shelter in Doraville. For weeks, they’ve received all the love, care, nutrition, medicines, vetting...

Breaking News:  Furkids Takes on Scammers!

Posted by Furkids Admin | Wednesday, June 7th

Strap on that helmet, and pull your seat belt tight, y'all...we're about to take you on a wild ride!

A couple of weeks ago, we were alerted to an organization called atlanticbreeders.com by a reader. Their street address is identical to ours, except it doesn't have a suite number. The poster wondered if this was a scam; and we wondered if our landlord had rented space to a dog breeder. We did a little investigating.

More questions came in over the next few days - we were puzzled, and distressed that anyone would think Furkids had an an affiliation with a breeder. After all, one of our missions is to convince people to "Adopt, Don't Shop"!

Then, last Saturday, we got a plea from someone who was supposed to pay a "deposit" on a pup by close of the day. He was frantic for information on this organization that, he thought, shared our physical space.

We dug deep. Turns out, the Atlantic Breeders phone number - which appears to be local to Atlanta - is actually a spoofed number in...

You already know that when you donate to Furkids, you're supporting a great cause. But now, it's official! On May 1, Furkids was awarded a coveted FOUR STAR rating with Charity Navigator for sound fiscal management and a proven commitment to accountability and transparency.

Four Stars are only awarded to organizations recognized as "Exceptional". This designation indicates that Furkids "Exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its Cause." Samantha Shelton, President & CEO of Furkids stated, “We are honored to be given this important distinction. This is a recognition of our hard work in the pursuit to make our organization both efficient and transparent as donors become increasingly concerned with how well their dollars are allocated.”

The highest possible rating by Charity Navigator illustrates our commitment to good governance and highlights how we pursue our mission in a fiscally responsible way. Only one-quarter of evaluated charities receive this...
