Senior Pets Seek Retirement Homes for the Holidays…

chloe November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month. At Furkids, we don't shy away from senior cats and dogs, we embrace them. We often take in animals that have been abandoned or surrendered by their owners after more than a decade in there care. While we don't comprehend how someone could let go of their beloved family member, we are happy and willing to give them the care they deserve in their golden years. Or sometimes an animal waits years to be adopted and becomes a senior while in our care. Pictured left is Chloe, she is 15 years old and has been waiting with us since 2006 to find a family. Will this be the Thanksgiving she goes home?

tinkerbellCurrently Furkids cares for more than 200 senior pets (over the age of 8). Some of these animals are in foster care. They will get to enjoy Thanksgiving with their foster families and know the comforts and spoils of being loved as they wait for their forever family to come along. However, more than 100 pets, mainly kitties, are waiting in our shelters RIGHT NOW. They will be fed and housed on Thanksgiving day, but they won't be part of a family. One of those dogs is Tinkerbell, pictured right. She is an 8 year old Bassett hound with a heart of gold.

They need us to pull together and help find them families to love and cherish them. Here are three ways you can help and it will not cost you a single dollar.

1. Become a Champion: Visit our website www.furkids.org and pick a senior cat or dog to champion. Be their voice. Share them on Facebook and Twitter. Make special flyers for them. Come meet them in person! By becoming "their person" you give them hundreds more opportunities to be seen by their forever family.

2. Foster a Senior Pet: Fostering for Furkids is simple. Fill out an application and a volunteer will come do a home check. Once that is complete you can come pick out a foster pet that works for your home. We provide the medical care, food and additional needed supplies. All you provide is the love and home. What a lovely gift to give a senior pet this holiday season. Learn more and apply to become a foster parent here.

3. Adopt a Senior Pet: If you have the space and love in your heart to adopt a senior cat or dog they will be forever grateful. During the entire month of November senior pets adoption fees are waived. That means you can bring home a fully vetted and healthy cat or dog for $0.

An 8 year old pet could have 8 more wonderful years left. We often here people say, "I can't adopt a senior pet. It will be too hard when they pass." Imagine how the seniors feel when people continue to pass by them and overlook them. Senior pets are past chewing and destructive phases, typically enjoy lounging around and being spoiled and don't require as much activity as a younger pet. Browse and apply to adopt a senior today. You will not regret it.
