AJC, the Cat Named after a Newspaper: Yesterday’s Garbage is Tomorrow’s Treasure
It’s been said that yesterday’s newspaper is fit only to wrap garbage. Someone in Atlanta felt the same way about old newspapers and a tiny kitten. Fortunately for the cat, Furkids knows that old news can be good news when the life of a homeless animal is at stake.
Furkids dog adoption event volunteers who were setting up at a Petco store for an adoption event thought they heard a struggled mewing sound as they stood at the front door of the store. They stopped, listened carefully, followed their ears and found a tiny black kitten. Someone had wrapped the kitten in an old Atlanta Journal and Constitution newspaper and thrown her in the shrubbery near the front of the store. The little cat was weak, sick, scared, filthy and hungry. She also appeared to have injured eyes and a damaged rear leg.
The volunteers, even though they were there to conduct dog adoptions, knew this was an animal in trouble. They tenderly scooped up the kitten, unwrapped her from her newspaper shroud and took her inside the store, giving her a sponge bath, cleaning up her eyes up and giving her a can of wet cat food. She rallied, but her leg and eyes were damaged and she clearly needed a lot of medical attention.
The volunteers immediately called the Furkids cat shelter to arrange for the kitten to be rescued and seen by a vet. And in honor of the newspaper that protected the kitten, they named her AJC, for Atlanta Journal and Constitution.
The kitten actually needed urgent care. Furkids staffers took her to an emergency veterinarian, where she was treated for fever, sneezing, infected eyes and a swollen foot. The vet couldn’t determine what had injured the cat, but she had a fractured tibia and broken toes. All of her injuries and illnesses had been left untreated, and she was wrapped in newspaper, thrown away to die, alone and suffering. Had it not been for the Furkids volunteers, she would have died. Instead, her story has a happy ending.
After treatment, little AJ Cat is sporting a big yellow cast on her back leg, and her eyes are bright and pain-free. She is spunky and happy and thriving at a Furkids cfoster home. As soon as she is healed and strong, she will be available for adoption.
