Barefoot – Featured Furkid (Dog)

Handsome black Barefoot has beautiful brown markings and an intense gaze as he seeks a forever home. The five year old, 15 pound friendly…Read  Manchester Terrier and Miniature Pinscher mix had to be given up by his owner who moved to an assisted living home. With his winning ways and energetic personality, he knows the right place with exactly the right people is out there for him. Barefoot likes people and other dogs and is keeping his eyes on the future – when he knows he’ll be able to snuggle in loving arms, play with his own toys and sleep in his very own bed, every night. If you are interested in meeting Barefoot please e-mail adopt@smalldoghumane.org or apply today!

Dusty – Featured Furkid

My story is a sad, but common, tale of what happens when humans divorce. I know I didn’t do anything wrong, so why didn’t I get to stay with my people? I guess the children and the pets often get the raw end of the deal in a divorce, and in my case, I was surrendered to Furkids. Right now, I’m having a hard time understanding what has happened to me and why I am in a shelter full of cats instead of a soft bed with loving hands to pet me.

I am an extremely beautiful 3-year-old girl with long, fluffy dilute tortoiseshell fur and I do like to play and be brushed and petted, so I hope you will want to take me home right away.

Please fill out an application so I can be happy and get on with my new life!

Please come meet her and see if you fall in love!

Dusty is cat number 12050. If you would like to meet her, contact us to set up an appointment.  Or, you can apply to adopt Dusty now.

No-Kill Shelter Facing Overcrowding

Traditionally animal adoptions are down in the summer, but this year animal abandonment is up. ( Click here for the video )

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Dogs and cats are dying every day because there are so many animals up for adoption. Traditionally pet adoptions are down in the summer, but this year animal abandonment is up. That’s proving to be a problem for no-kill shelters

“Georgia has a very challenging pet overpopulation problem,” Furkids Executive Director Samantha Shelton said.

Hundreds of those pets come through the door at Furkids no-kill shelter.

“We’re seeing people do some pretty desperate moves, leaving animals unattended in carriers, in crates,” Shelton said.

A surveillance camera at the shelter captured a woman walk up to the door with a crate carrying a cat and five kittens. Someone inside asks her to wait, but she just leaves the animals.

A dog was left outside one of Furkids adoption centers with a sign saying she needs a good home.

Fur kids has placed 7,000 animals since they started 10 years ago. As the economy has gone down, so have the adoption numbers.

“Furkids has experienced an increase in intakes because of people losing their homes. The adoption numbers aren’t what they used to be with people losing their jobs, losing their homes. Our intakes are up, adoptions are down,” Shelton said.

Shelton hates to turn anyone away because she knows instead of carrying for the pet, the owner may end up brining the pet to animal control where it will be put down.

“It breaks my heart that there aren’t enough homes. There are so many great deserving pets and there are just not enough homes,” Shelton said.

Shelton encouraged people to spay and neuter their pets and to remember owning a pet should be a lifetime commitment. This year Furkids has had 30 pets returned.

Confetti | Featured Furkid

Are you a special person who really wants to give a sweet girl a chance? Take a look at our darling Confetti! She is a total purr machine who loves to be petted, and rewards you with head-butts again and again.

Confetti has the softest coat you can imagine and she likes to rub against your legs for attention. She is very laid back. She would love to be your only kitty, or wouldn’t mind sharing her new home with another low-key cat.

Confetti is an older cat — about 10 years old.  She has been waiting for her forever home longer than she deserves. Wouldn’t it be great if this sweet girl could spend her “older” years in a loving home with comfy furniture where she can watch birds out the window?

Confetti and the Furkids staff would be very grateful if you’d give her a chance. Please come meet her and see if you fall in love!

Confetti is cat number 4415. If you would like to meet her, contact us to set up an appointment.  Or, you can apply to adopt Confetti now.

O.C. | Featured Furkid

This incredibly handsome boy is our very special Orange Cat (O.C.).  Ok, so we won’t win any originality awards for his name.  :-)

However, we will accept full credit for saving him and keeping him safe, happy, and healthy!  O.C. was abandoned in an apartment. He was alone there for about 2 weeks (!) until someone heard him meowing and called Furkids.  We immediately rescued him and welcomed him into our huge loving circle of cats and people.  With us, he has thrived.

Despite is rough start, today he is a very happy and healthy young man. He’s a big boy; a friendly giant. Given his time alone during his abandonment, it’s not surprising that he now loves attention.  He also loves to be brushed and will always accept a cat treat…or two.  And then there are his looks — gorgeous orange coat, amazing face, and unique markings. He knows he’s cute!

O.C. is about 6 years young and would love to be taken into a loving home. He currently lives in our FIV house with all his buddies.

O.C. is cat #8623.  If you would like to meet him, contact us to set up an appointment.  Or, you can apply to adopt O.C. now.

Nalley Driven for a Cause (Vote for Furkids!)

The contest deadline is JULY 10. Your votes will help Furkids win a van from Nalley Cars. Pure and simple, the winner is the organization that gets the most votes, and Furkids is in second place. We need every vote!

Here are five powerful reasons why should you vote for Furkids.

  • Be part of a winning team that doesn’t discriminate by breed. Furkids rescues all cats and dogs, not just one breed.
  • Save more animals. Furkids serves 600 homeless dogs and cats per day – far more than any other organization in the state.
  • Help more animals find homes. Right now, Furkids has one van to serve 600 animals and 14 locations – cat and dog shelters, 4 PETCO locations, 5 PetSmart locations, a home for FIV cats, a Thrift Store – plus dozens of foster homes.
  • Assist law enforcement officials. Law enforcement officials call on Furkids to assist them with hoarding cases – sick, starving, injured, neglected cats and dogs imprisoned in filthy conditions, and a van will help Furkids efficiently rescue more of these animals.
  • Help Furkids volunteers do even more. A second van means we can cut down on rental vehicles for adoption events and for the Furkids Thrift Store. A second van also will keep volunteers from using their personal vehicles.
  • Magnify the power of your vote! It takes money to own a van, and Furkids has that covered. If Furkids wins, an anonymous donor has volunteered to donate to pay for taxes, insurance and maintenance on the vehicle for three years.

Make the most of your vote by supporting the organization that will save more animals than any other. Vote today and every day through July 10! Here’s how:

You must have a Facebook account to participate and you can vote once each 24 hour period. To vote, follow this link or click on the banner below, then click “Vote Now,” log into your Facebook account and choose FURKIDS!

If the link above does not work, search “Nalley Driven for a Cause” on Facebook and make sure you choose the app, not the page. Click on the “Vote Now” button and select Furkids from the list.

Pansy | Featured Furkid

Pansy is one of the sweetest and friendliest cats you will ever meet! You will not be able to resist smiling when you watch her happily make biscuits while you rub her tummy. She is very demonstrative in her love.  She loves to give kisses by touching her nose to yours and will nuzzle her face against your neck when you pick her up.  She would be a perfect lap cat and you will end up feeling so loved by her every time she gazes adoringly at you.

Pansy needs a little extra care.  She is from a hoarding situation and the prolonged exposure to the poor air quality in that environment left her with a damaged sinus cavity.  She needs a regular saline nebulizer treatment, but she takes it in stride. Generally, she is in good health and refuses to let her sinus problems keep her from enjoying her life!

Pansy is about 8 years old and has been waiting patiently for the right person or family to find her. Could it be you?

If you are considering adopting two cats, Pansy would love live with her BFF, Jesse Girl (ID 6586), who is another lovely green-eyed brown tabby.

Pansy is cat #6089.  If you would like to meet her, contact us to set up an appointment.  Or, you can apply to adopt Pansy now.

Bobo | Featured Furkid

Sweet and handsome Bobo will win your heart with his soft gaze, gentle rubs, and cuddling. He is patient and kind — the type of cat that will bring peace and love into your life just by being your friend. He is GORGEOUS and looks like Sylvester the Cat from Looney Tunes, except Bobo has a bobtail.

Bobo is FIV positive, but that in no way shortens his lifespan and he is in very good health. He is currently a hall cat at the main Furkids shelter.  Because he loves everyone, he is the official greeter when you walk into the shelter. He likes dogs, other cats, kids, cat trees, and FOOD.  Open a bag of chips and you will find Bobo at your feet!

Please consider adopting Bobo and giving him the loving forever home he truly deserves!

Bobo is cat #9271.  He is six years old.  If you would like to meet him, contact us to set up an appointment.  Or, you can apply to adopt Bobo now.
