Hurricane Matthew Victims Update

Posted by Furkids Admin | Thursday, October 27th

- UDPATE -

Two weeks ago, Furkids took in 63 Hurricane Matthew victims who had been affected by severe flooding in the Carolinas. We asked for contributions to help with the care of these helpless animals who had lost everything, and our fans stepped up. Thanks to your generous donations, we were able to provide for all the Hurricane Matthew dogs and cats who came into our shelters. Many of the animals were placed into safe, warm, loving foster homes and are settling in well and recovering.

Again, we want to thank all our supporters, volunteers, fosters and staff who contributed toward this astonishing rescue. We are so thankful for each and every one of you. If you would like to make a donation toward the animals still in the program, please visit furkids.org/donation.

The Hurricane Matthew animals will be available for adoption soon. Follow us on Facebook for updates!

Over 50 Hurricane Matthew victims to arrive at Furkids

Posted by Furkids Admin | Thursday, October 13th

42 cats and nine dogs are being transported to Furkids Animal Rescue & Shelters after being left in the wake Hurricane Matthew’s destruction. Many shelters in coastal areas in the Southeast have been flooded, both literally and figuratively.

Jamie Stillwachs from Brother Wolf Animal Rescue in Asheville, NC, said that a shelter in Marion County, SC was swept away by the rising river waters. “[It] doesn't look like they even have a shelter to go back to,” said Stillwachs. “All animals, staff and volunteers are holed up in an emergency center at this time.”

Samantha Shelton, Furkids founder and executive director, wants Furkids to be a safety net for the frightened families separated from their animals, the damaged shelters and their animals.

“It’s terrifying for people to be forced to flee from the dangers of a hurricane, and it’s heartbreaking for families to be separated from their animal family members,” Shelton said.  “Furkids is opening our arms to...

Flea-and-Tick-Ridden Puppies Rescued!

Posted by Furkids Admin | Thursday, September 22nd

These puppies were just rescued by Furkids. Their mother is a pet living in Lula, Georgia, but she is an “outside” dog. The owner said that the mother dog got out under the backyard fence and met up with a neighborhood male dog. When the mother returned home, it was discovered that she was pregnant. The babies were born outside in deplorable conditions. For eight weeks, they and their mom have been subjected to the elements.

Our rescuers were called out to the property about five puppies, but upon arrival, only four puppies were found. This means that one of the puppies is missing. The four that were on the property were covered in thousands of fleas and ticks. The Furkids medical team has been working tediously for the last two days on removing all of the bugs and properly vetting the dogs.

Unfortunately, the owner was unwilling to surrender the mother dog along with the babies. We are hoping to receive a call regarding a change of heart about the mother dog and about the...

Fabulous FeLV+ Furkids

Posted by Furkids Admin | Wednesday, August 10th

It’s no secret that Furkids is committed to saving as many animals as possible. We are a rescue that isn’t afraid to take on the hard cases… even the FeLV+ ones. Furkids has two FeLV+ suites, one at the cat shelter and one at the dog shelter, which house 17 cats total. FeLV+ cats can live long, happy lives, and Furkids provides them a warm, loving, safe environment to live out the rest of their lives, unless they happen to get adopted (which, unfortunately, doesn’t happen very often).

When a cat is FeLV+, it means that the cat has a disease called feline leukemia. It is a virus that weakens cats’ immune systems and can cause some types of cancer. Feline leukemia is transmitted from cat to cat through biting, grooming, close contact and sharing food dishes, water bowls and litter boxes. It can also be transferred from mother to kitten via nursing. Because FeLV+ cats need to be separated from FeLV- cats, it makes it difficult to find homes that can commit to only living with...
