“Wrong Place, Wrong Time” Almost Cost 61 Lives

Posted by Furkids Admin | Friday, July 28th

Yes, you read that right: sixty-one, including Cosette. This is a story about chance, empathy, compassion, survival, and ultimately, this is a story about you.

Summer is always a busy time at Furkids, as the shelter population swells with spring and summer litters and are compounded by owner surrenders during vacation travel season, but this summer made headlines.

In June, the entire feline population at Bartow County Animal Control was accidentally exposed to feline distemper. Potentially deadly and incredibly virulent, this diagnosis meant that every cat in the facility would require weeks of careful quarantine and medical care that was beyond the county facility’s budget. Sixty-five cats were scheduled for euthanasia.

When Bartow County officials contacted Furkids for help, a rescue operation was launched and the cats were transferred and safely quarantined at Furkids’ cat shelter in Doraville. For weeks, they’ve received all the love, care, nutrition, medicines, vetting...

Breaking News:  Furkids Takes on Scammers!

Posted by Furkids Admin | Wednesday, June 7th

Strap on that helmet, and pull your seat belt tight, y'all...we're about to take you on a wild ride!

A couple of weeks ago, we were alerted to an organization called atlanticbreeders.com by a reader. Their street address is identical to ours, except it doesn't have a suite number. The poster wondered if this was a scam; and we wondered if our landlord had rented space to a dog breeder. We did a little investigating.

More questions came in over the next few days - we were puzzled, and distressed that anyone would think Furkids had an an affiliation with a breeder. After all, one of our missions is to convince people to "Adopt, Don't Shop"!

Then, last Saturday, we got a plea from someone who was supposed to pay a "deposit" on a pup by close of the day. He was frantic for information on this organization that, he thought, shared our physical space.

We dug deep. Turns out, the Atlantic Breeders phone number - which appears to be local to Atlanta - is actually a spoofed number in...

Furkids Awarded Coveted FOUR STAR Rating with Charity Navigator!

Posted by Furkids Admin | Friday, May 12th

You already know that when you donate to Furkids, you're supporting a great cause. But now, it's official! On May 1, Furkids was awarded a coveted FOUR STAR rating with Charity Navigator for sound fiscal management and a proven commitment to accountability and transparency.

Four Stars are only awarded to organizations recognized as "Exceptional". This designation indicates that Furkids "Exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its Cause." Samantha Shelton, President & CEO of Furkids stated, “We are honored to be given this important distinction. This is a recognition of our hard work in the pursuit to make our organization both efficient and transparent as donors become increasingly concerned with how well their dollars are allocated.”

The highest possible rating by Charity Navigator illustrates our commitment to good governance and highlights how we pursue our mission in a fiscally responsible way. Only one-quarter of evaluated charities receive this...

Accentuate the PAWSitive - FIV is No Big Deal!

Posted by Furkids Admin | Thursday, May 11th

On April 22nd, we hosted our very first "Accentuate the PAWSitive" PAWty to spotlight our fabulous felines who happen to test positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). Long misunderstood, these beautiful, friendly, and highly-adoptable cats are sometimes viewed as a threat to non-FIV kitties, although the virus is transmitted only through deep bite wounds (the type delivered by un-altered territorial toms), and from mom to baby. They have even been euthanized, because they were deemed "sick". FIV cats do have an elevated risk for very treatable conditions like upper respiratory infections, but these are easily detected and resolved. The fact is, with normal veterinary care, the life expectancy of an FIV+ cat is no different than the lifespan of an FIV- cat.

Furkids knows the facts, and we wanted to spread the good word. So we threw a PAWty! And we had SO. MUCH. FUN. The FIV Suite was abuzz all day, and the kitties had Special Guests - adorable Abby Tabby, and the...

THANK YOU from Furkids!

January 6, 2017

Dear Furkids Friends,

Happy 2017 to all of you!

A few weeks ago, some Furkids family members got together to find an innovative way to help our organization increase adoptions and gain additional support.  The product of this team’s creative efforts is the clever, wildly appealing and funny Kitty Kommercial featuring some of our animals, staff and volunteers. We loved the video (who wouldn’t?) and posted it to our Facebook page on December 24. This past Tuesday, someone shared the clip on Reddit, and almost immediately, the clip went viral.  We had no idea how broadly our message had spread until Wednesday morning, when we woke up to a flood of emails, calls and social media postings unlike anything we had ever experienced in our 15-year history.

Without a doubt, the attention is far beyond anything our organization could realistically wish for. Furkids has received praise and well wishes from over 9,000 people globally, and the momentum continues to build...
