Safety Tips for July 4th

Posted by Furkids | Thursday, June 27th

Like many Americans, you may be planning to have a festive Fourth of July. Along with barbeques and day at the beach, no July holiday celebration would be complete without enjoying the fireworks that celebrate the birth of our nation.

Perhaps you are considering staying at home and planning a get-together with friends and family. Or, you may want to go check out your local professional fireworks display. While putting the finishing touches on your planned celebration, take a moment to consider your pets.

Unlike people, pets don’t associate the noise, flashes, and burning smell of pyrotechnics with celebrations. Pets are terrified of fireworks, and often panic at the loud whizzes and bangs they produce.

Because of this, the American Humane Association reports that July 5 is the busiest day of the year for animal shelters. Why? In a 2005 press release the Indiana Proactive Animal Welfare, Inc. (PAW) stated that animal shelters the day after Fourth of July are “inundated with pets...

Pippa Needs Our Help

Posted by Furkids | Wednesday, June 12th

Hi, my name is Pippa. I am 13 years old and the nice people at Furkids have given me a place to call home until a forever family is found. I am so lucky!

I was rescued in a Little 5 Points parking lot a few years ago. They say I was near death, dehydrated & starved when I was found. The people at Furkids took great care of me and I am much better now. I am a hall cat at the shelter. This means I get to roam around the lobby and front office and greet visitors. I love doing this, but recently it has been harder for me.
You see, I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism which requires daily medication (I take them very well if I do say so), but even that doesn't make me feel better. There is a neat procedure they told me about called radiodine therapy that should make me feel better! There is even a place in Atlanta that does this procedure, it is called Radio Cat. The treatment is 98-99% effective! I am really excited to get this, but it is kind of expensive.
Furkids has promised to...

Featured Furkid - Winnie

Posted by Furkids | Wednesday, June 12th

Date of Birth: 02/10/2011

Winnie is a snowy white girl who was rescued by Furkids from animal control. Her pure white coat is smooth and sleek. Winnie is a “people cat”, enjoying attention from humans. She has lived in a wonderful foster home where she has been given lots of love and affection. Winnie returns this adoration in purrs. She enjoys a great cat tree where she can watch the world outside and also look down upon her kingdom. This girl has a playful side as well and thoroughly enjoys grabbing string toys from her perch. She is seeking a home where she can decide when to grace you with her presence, which will be often. If you’d like to give a deserving kitty her own home so she can forget the past and move forward with her life, then apply to meet Winnie today.

Featured Furkid: Sasha

Posted by Furkids | Saturday, June 1st

When a Furkids volunteer heard barking behind an empty grocery store in December 2012, she found a frightened, homeless dog living on a filthy old mattress pad. Furkids shelter managers were called to the help. What they saw was an injured, desperate dog, abandoned and barking for defense – and for help.  Lauren Frost, one of the managers, returned to earn the dog’s trust. Slowly, the dog stopped barking, calmed down, and allowed Lauren to be her friend (pictured left).  Furkids brought her into its program, named her Sasha and placed her into a loving foster home. Sasha was spayed, tested for heartworms and received all of her vaccinations.
Today, happy, sweet Sasha is living in a dedicated foster home full of love, and waiting for someone to adopt her. Thankfully, wounds on her ears, tail and back are healed and her body and spirit are whole again. Sasha's foster mom always keep two foster dogs at a time. Since January 2013 Sasha has experienced 5 foster brothers...
