Senior Cats Give Good Love too!

Furkids rescues many senior cats in need of loving, permanent homes. We believe that no matter the age of a pet they are deserving of a new start to life.

We give our senior cats the loving care they need, for as long as they need, until the right home comes along. In some cases, our senior cats live out their lives with us as we shepherd them gently into their twilight years.

Because our senior cats stay with us longer, we incur more expense as a result. That is why we ask you to consider sponsoring, fostering, or better yet - ADOPTING - a senior pet this year!

"The longer I live the more beautiful life becomes."

MEET STEVE

In 2007, Steve came to Furkids from the streets and has lived with us since. We estimate him to be about 15 years old. Thanks to the generous support of volunteers he received treatment for hyperthyroidism, is off his medicine, and is gaining weight, getting shiny fur and thriving!

Steve likes to have conversations with you and is a good listener. He loves food - particularly his wet food treats.

Steve is the cat that keeps giving. His nine lives haven't run out and it appears he has many more years to give the loving family who will care for him in his old age.

Benefits of Adopting a Senior Cat

Senior pets have a disadvantage because most people wanting to adopt tend to overlook them due to their age. But senior pets are just as affectionate, loyal, and personable as any other pet- if not more. The advantages of adopting a senior pet are plenty - they are generally calm, laid back, and easy to please. They do not make attempts to climb the tree at Christmas, nor do they play romper room at 3am in the morning. They make perfect companions for any family, especially a senior person looking for a companion, or a couple who works long hours. Their senior status alone is not indicative of their health status. Most of our seniors cats are very healthy, or have easily managed conditions. If you are considering adopting a senior cat, however, be prepared to cover any costs associated with age-related illnesses. Generally speaking, a yearly check up, or preventative health is all that is necessary to keep them in good health. To view our adoptable cats, please visit www.furkids.org/adoptables.html.

Roxanne is a senior cat from the "Gwinnett 14" hoarding case. For years, she endured neglect in the hands of a person who did not provide necessary medical care, which has ultimately affected her health. Although we have taken care of her immediate medical needs, she continues to suffer from severe skin dermatitis- we are seeing a dermatologist for her condition. She is also on a special diet for her dental disease. In spite of previous neglect in her life, she remains a very sweet cat! Roxanne is a permanent resident at our cage-free, no-kill shelter where she enjoys the company of the other cats and our volunteers. We ask that you consider sponsoring her for a month to help offset the cost of her continued medical expenses. With your donation, we can continue to rescue cats like Roxanne and give them the lives they deserve!

We are pleased to announce that Michael and his mother Lindsay have found their forever homes with a wonderful person who found the beauty in adopting senior pets! Here is their adoption story...

Dearest Vanessa! I've just turned on my computer because the last couple of days have been busy, happy and exciting.

Night #1: both very comfortable in walk-in closet -- love being "under" the hanging clothes and curled up in their bed, they eat, drink, use potty box and purr when I pet them. They stayed in the closet all night, but the closet door leading to the bathroom was cracked & the other bathroom door leading to the bedroom was cracked and Lindsay peeked around that door, into the bedroom on Thursday morning.

Thursday - more eating, pooping and purring. I shopped for new catnip toys and an additional potty box. Two out of town over night guests met them and both cats were very receptive to my friends, responding to petting and so forth.

Thursday night, they both slept at the foot of my bed!

Friday morning: Michael is TALKING a lot and Lindsay is talking some. Both venture out of the bedroom door to the kitchen and sniff around. Lindsay finds the sunroom and glass doors which look out on the deck with the squirrels and chipmunks -- she is a stealth huntress, indeed!

They are mad at me now, I ran the vaccume cleaner -- they are curled up in the tub with towels and blankies and won't come out for all of my pleading and begging. They are stubborn that way and I will give them more warning next time I vaccume -- I've learned my lesson.

Lindsay's name has morphed into Lilly -- Lilly pad, Lilly belle, Lilly-putian, Lilly-love, Lilly-bean, etc. She hasn't seemed to notice.

Can't keep thinking about Mr. Green Jeans -- can you please send me an update on him? Send me all the details about him. I miss him and Hadrian and Sidney a lot.

I leave on a trip tomorrow and get back Monday evening -- neighbors will be checking in on the wee babes.

Many thanks, April.

Michael is one of our alumni senior cats who exemplifies what we do as a rescue organization. Not all of our rescue cats are young, healthy, or even cute. In fact, Michael is a pitiful sight - with a deformed eye, crinkled ear and no teeth - he was the face of neglect. Unfortunately, there are many more cats like Michael in our program. For instance, some need daily medications, or special food, or have chronic conditions that require the care of specialists. In Michael's case, he is lucky in that he only required special food.
