About Furkids

Furkids is a 501(c)3, charitable, non-profit organization that operates the largest cage-free, no-kill shelter in the Southeast for rescued cats and a no-kill shelter for dogs where they can experience the best care in a loving environment until they are adopted. The Furkids mission is to help end pet overpopulation in Georgia through sterilization, high-quality adoption and by providing valuable spay/neuter services and pet care education to people in the community. Each year, Furkids rescues, shelters, sterilizes, rehabilitates, and places hundreds of animals in permanent, loving homes. Furkids, which cares for more animals on a daily basis than any other local organization, including the Atlanta Humane Society, has rescued and altered more than 7,000 animals since its founding in 2002. Approximately 600 animals are in the Furkids program today, in the Furkids shelters, PetSmart and PETCO adoption centers and foster homes.

We guided the students on what items to collect and what items were greatly needed at our cat and dog shelters. The entire 5th grade class, approximately 90 students, went to work collecting items for our animals. As you can see below they created fantastic posters to market and promote their collection drive efforts throughout their school!

 

 

 

 

 

 

On May 2, our staff arrived at the school to collect the donated items and speak to the students about our program. We were overjoyed when we saw an entire conference room filled with supplies!!! 

We are so proud of these students for going above and beyond to help the homeless animals of Furkids! In addition to the supply drive, the students raised $150 to purchase digital scales for our shelter.  Congratulations to these wonderful students for their philanthropic spirit! We are so proud of them and grateful for their efforts! www.furkids.org

Pedro is a picture-perfect tan-and-white Chihuahua Mix. He weighs eight pounds and has the bearings of a champion and the heart of a lap dog. Pedro has overcome a lot in life and done that with a great spirit. He’s low-key, likes to bask in the sun and share lap time. He is good with other dogs. He was given up by his owner no fault of his own, at just three years old. After all, this dear little guy says, love is forever isn’t it? Furkids/Small Dog Rescue knows it is – and is determined to match Pedro, a loyal BFF kind of guy, with a forever home where he will be nurtured and cherished for his many years ahead. He likes other dogs, doesn’t mind cats and walks nicely on a leash and rides exceptionally well in the car – in fact, he loves to tag along on errands in cool weather! He listens well and has great house manners. This super guy – who loves basking in the sun just like a true Chihuahua — deserves a fabulous forever home. He will return the TLC with snuggles and loyalty for all of his days. Watch Pedro play with his foster brother Spencer!

Her ears were pinned back and her eyes were wide as she puffed herself up to seem larger and more fearsome. What adopter could possibly want to take her home?

Jump ahead just seven weeks: the same cat rests calmly in her bed watching people bustling about. She sniffs at hands that are extended to her and lifts her head to receive petting. She rolls over and fearlessly exposes her belly. She gently nibbles a treat from the fingers of a visitor, purring softly.

What brought about this remarkable true transformation? The Purrkids program! Purrkids volunteers work one-on-one with shy, scared, timid, aggressive, and under-socialized cats to help them become more adoptable. Purrkids volunteers change these kitties lives in profound and lasting ways. The work can be difficult and results can be slow, but it’s incredibly rewarding to watch a frightened cat learn to trust people. [By the way, that black cat is Muzby on the left, and she has become so affectionate that she has already won the heart of a potential adopter!]

The Purrkids program is not for everyone. You must commit to spend at least 30 minutes every week with each kitty that you choose to help. While prior experience with “difficult” cats may be helpful, it’s not required; you will be taught how to work with your Purrkids kitty. For now, we are accepting only volunteers who are over 21 years old.

10 of our kittens spent today filming on set ofAnchorman 2: The Legend Continues ! They were some of the most well-behaved and friendly kittens thanks to our wonderful foster homes (the crew even said so!) We can’t share details or photos, but we can say that 10 rescued Furkids kittens will be in a scene with Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd in the upcoming movie!!!! From the streets of Atlanta, Georgia to the films of Hollywood, these kittens are stars!

February is time to celebrate love. What better way to celebrate than with a new family member to cuddle, kiss, and hug! 

The entire month of February we have lowered our adoption fees for cats to help them find their perfect valentine. 

ALL cat adoption fees will be lowered by 50%.

All cats have the following vetting included in their adoption fee:

  • Sterilization
  • Combo test for cats
  • FVRCP vaccinations
  • Rabies vaccination
  • Leukemia vaccinations
  • Dewormings
  • Flea treatment
  • Earmite treatment (if needed)
  • Microchip
  • Any other vetting as needed, such as additional testing, major surgery, etc.
  • Ongoing complimentary nail trimmings
  • Furkids as a resource for the life of the animal

During February 1-28 Adoption Fees for cats will be:  

  • $42.50 for one adult cat (one year of age and older), $75 for two
  • $62.50 for one kitten (under one year of age), $100 for two, $125 for three
  • $87.50 for one adult cat and one kitten
  • $21.25 for senior cats 8 years and older
  • Individuals over 62 years of age may adopt an adult /senior cat for only $21.25

Emma Bear is a beautiful brown tabby Maine Coon mix. All this girl wants is someone who will give her lots of TLC and a forever home. Emma Bear had a home once but when her family could no longer care for her they surrendered her to Furkids. She is very shy and will need someone who is patient with her and will give her a second chance. Even though Emma Bear is an older kitty at 8-years-old, but she still has a lot of love to give. She loves to be petted and purrs immediately when you start scratching her under her chin. Emma Bear is very low key and would probably be best as an only pet in a home with no young children. Is there anyone out there who can open their heart and home to this beautiful girl? Cats over 8-years-old have a reduced adoption fee of $42.50 to encourage people to take a second look! We hope you will fill out an application today for this beautiful girl. She deserves a forever home!
