5th Grade Students’ Amazing Collection Drive

When the students of Holy Innocents Episcopal School approached Furkids with their desire to facilitate a collection drive and fundraiser for our animals we were thrilled! We guided the students on what items to collect and what items were greatly needed at our cat and dog shelters. The entire 5th grade class, approximately 90 students, went to work collecting items for our animals. As you can see below they created fantastic posters to market and promote their collection drive efforts throughout their school!

On May 2, our staff arrived at the school to collect the donated items and speak to the students about our program. We were overjoyed when we saw an entire conference room filled with supplies!!!

We are so proud of these students for going above and beyond to help the homeless animals of Furkids! In addition to the supply drive, the students raised $150 to purchase digital scales for our shelter.  Congratulations to these wonderful students for their philanthropic spirit! We are so proud of them and grateful for their efforts! www.furkids.org

Donate Wise Now – A Simple Way to Support our Mission

If you are a business owner, or decision maker in a business that uses credit card processing, we are excited to tell you about an extraordinary opportunity to experience unbeatable processing fee, new equipment, and help Furkids…all at the same time.

“Donate Wise Now”, developed by Cynergy Data, enables merchants to add a fundraising component to the point-of-sale, Why not give your customers the option to contribute $1, $3, or $5 to supports Furkids?

Done Wise Now is simple, easy and is a proven fundraising channel that works. In just three weeks, nearly $900 was raised at one merchant location, Park Pet Supply in East Atlanta!

Victoria Park, owner of Park Pet Supply says customer acceptance of this initiative has been very positive with many customers thanking her for providing the opportunity to help Furkids. ”The icing on top of the cake is that at the same time we were able to employ this tool to help nonprofit causes that we believe in, we were able to lower our cost for merchant processing at the same time. Cynergy Data and their representative Dane Nesbit were able to provide the necessary equipment at no cost and are always available if I need assistance. We are glad to lend our support and during the last three weeks, have raised $861.00 in donations from customers wanting to help the Furkids mission!”

Furkids and Good Mews Support DeKalb County Police by Accepting Animals in Cruelty Investigation

On November 29, in an animal hoarding investigation, the DeKalb Police Cruelty Unit removed dozens of cats living in unsanitary conditions from a home in Dunwoody. Some of the cats were suffering from conditions commonly found when large numbers of animals live together in a confined, unhealthy environment. The case is under investigation by the DeKalb Police Cruelty Unit.

In general, cats in a hoarding situation can suffer from upper respiratory infections, flea infestation, starvation, stress, and many other ailments.

We can understand someone’s desire to want to save animals from death, but a single family doesn’t have the resources to provide the proper care for a large number of animals, and that’s why facilities like ours exist.

Furkids has taken in over 40 of the cats and Good Mews has taken in over 25. Both organizations are medically caring for the cats and both have exacting adoption processes to appropriately match homeless animals with loving, adoptive families in lifelong homes.

If you look around you can see that shelters like Furkids and Good Mews are equipped to care for large numbers of animals and keep them healthy and happy.

Georgia has a major pet overpopulation problem and spaying and neutering is critical to better controlling the numbers of unwanted animals in our state.

These cats will soon be available for adoption. Please consider making a donation towards their care to Furkids or Good Mews. It costs approximately $200 per cat to provide their medical care and prepare them for adoption.

Group Fun at Furkids

We love having groups of volunteers come to the shelter.  It always means that there will be lots of smiles, fun, laughter, learning, and much needed attention for the cats.  Our shelter is so magical, that nearly every group that visits for the first time ends up wanting to come back again!

Here are some groups that stopped by in October.

Harbor Oaks Montessori visited on 10/21.

Edie Blankenberg brought her 6 students with her to visit & help out.

Here they are in Rooms 1, 2, and 3 giving the cats a lot of affection.

The students enjoyed their visit so much that they decided to volunteer regularly on Friday mornings!

We, and the cats, look forward to it!

The DeRiche Agency, Inc. Community Connection Center in Kennesaw works with developmentally disabled adults to help give them more social interaction.

They visited the shelter on 10/21 as well.

And just like the Montessori school girls above, this group is also planning to volunteer now on a weekly basis.

Lucky for us and all of our animals!

It’s a fact.  Girl Scout Troops love Furkids and Furkids loves Girl Scout Troops.

Here’s Girl Scout Troop #11512 visiting Furkids for a volunteer day on 10/20.

Thank you, girls, for helping us out!  We appreciate you!

Here’s Daisy Troop #12532 from Dunwoody United Methodist Church on their volunteer day on 10/15.

Here are some phrases we can add to their cool t-shirts:

“Never to small to…”

  • Volunteer at Furkids!
  • Learn how to care for animals.
  • Bring smiles wherever we go.

Thanks for visiting, girls!

Students from Georgia Tech’s Team BUZZ helped out on 10/15.  Team BUZZ is a regular volunteer group at Furkids.

Here is the most recent group at the FIV house surrounding an unidentified (yet very relaxed) kitty on the floor in the middle of all of them!

Thank you, Team BUZZ!  We always enjoy your company.

Do you belong to a group that could come volunteer some time at Furkids?  Work groups, student groups, social groups, church groups, or just a group of family/friends — get some people together and send an e-mail to volunteer@furkids.org to arrange your visit.  We look forward to seeing you.

Furkids & Community Partnerships

We recently featured our new partnership with Jewish Family & Career Services in our June 2011 newsletter.  We wanted to expand on how great it has been working with the group of volunteers from their Tools for Independence WORKS program — a division of JF&CS serving adults with developmental disabilities.

Pictured above left are Sammy-the-cat and Sandy.  Right: David and Todd in Room 1.

These great volunteers come in to the main shelter every Monday and Wednesday.  They clean in the mornings, go to lunch, then come back to socialize with the cats.  So they spend their entire day with us at the shelter twice a week.  That’s wonderful!  In addition to all those valuable hours, they also help at our Thrift Store on Tuesdays, where they help with sorting and staging the donated items that come in to the store.

We are very proud to partner with JF&CS and we are beyond honored that their WORKS participants have chosen Furkids as the place where they want to help.  Three cheers for them!  And a huge “thank you.”
